Charlene...AKA...FLIP FLOP GIRL!!!
Your Support Means the World to Me

This is my 9th year walking Kidney March...yes 8 times I have done this crazy journey and yet I still keep coming back.

This year is a bit different.  For 8 years I walked for my Grandpa who championed as a dialysis patient, and this year I will walk in his memory.

Like many people who walk I have a story...Kidney disease has affected many people, and their families and all too often it is the reason that we loose a loved one.  My story of loss is not tragic, in fact we walk this year to Celebrate a life long lived and HARD FOUGHT against kidney disease.

Grandpa was 79 when his kidneys shut down, far too old for any hope of a transplant nor would he have wanted one.  For a few years he went to the Hanna Hospital 3 times a week and then the units there were shut down.  He had to be taken by taxi to Drumheller 3 times a week.  At that time we did not expect him to make the winter, but through sheer determination and the desire to live for the next big family event he crusaded on...for 11 years in total.

On the Sunday of the 2017 kidney march just after closing ceremonies my mom got a phone call from my Grandma saying that Grandpa had decided not to go to Dialysis on Monday morning.  This was it, it was his call...
this man was tired!!!! Tired of the drive 3 times a week ,tired of the pain, tired of the lack of energy and more then anything he was tired of living with the Disease and being on Dialysis. The family met with the Doctor and the dialysis nurses and the plan was put into motion to make him comfortable.

He spent the week telling stories and being in good spirits and his only one regret was that he would never get back on the baseball field again.  I was lucky enough to be in the room when Grandpa took his last breath, and at 91 years of age,  it was his choice of when and how to say good bye and he did it with dignity.

I think about him almost every day and this year, I know that he will be walking right beside me in this journey.
