Your Support Means the World to Me

Kidney Disease is on the rise, affecting one in 10 Canadians.

I am taking part in Kidney March - a 3 day, 100 km journey from Kananaskis to Calgary. This is more than just a walk. This is big. I am joining hundreds of others as a united front against kidney disease.

Whoa! Who knew that in 1999 when I decided to change nursing jobs at the University of Alberta Hospital that it would impact my life so much. I went to a new job on the Renal Inpatient Unit 5A4 in 1999 but was nervous about the change so I accepted the job as a temporary for 6 months so I could return to my old job if I wanted to return to it. Well it appears that it was a good move as I am still on Unit 5A4 and I never looked back. Kidney Disease and Organ Donation are weaved in my life and inspire me to raise awareness and fundraise for this important cause that truly effects so many people.

My story goes something like this.

November 1998 - A dear soul and an extended family member gave an amazing gift to her friend, she shared her KIDNEY. This incredible gift continues to function 19 years later.

2 October 2012 – We were blessed with a beautiful grandson and he is named Karter. Karter was born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) and he has dilated cardiomyopathy.  This wee warrior received a pacemaker at 8 days old, a biventricular pacemaker at 6 months old and in June 2013 he was listed for a Heart transplant. Talk about scary stuff!!! Thankfully his heart had recovered enough to be taken off the heart transplant list on  December 3, 2014. Karter’s life course has had many crazy bumps but with his Bi-V pacemaker, medications and incredible support he has blossomed into a beautiful Kindergartener!

2017 – My sister-in-law who has dealt with Kidney disease pretty much her whole life had to start hemodialysis. Her world now must revolve around 3 times a week hemodialysis and all the challenges that come with that. She is listed for a Kidney transplant and waits for that incredible gift.

1999 up to the present time and into the future! – Renal patients become part of one’s work family. All the amazing team members I work with and so many others that assist these patients through their journey only want and hope the best for them.

This, along with my teammate Diana, has Inspired me to participate in this 100 km Kidney March and to raise a minimum of $2200.00. Please donate to sponsor me if you are able, your kidneys, many other folks and Me will be very grateful!
